Alfuzosin is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-1 blockers. It is primarily used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Alfuzosin works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate gland and the bladder neck. This relaxation helps to relieve the symptoms associated with BPH, such as difficulty urinating, weak urine flow, frequent urination, and the need to urinate urgently or during the night.
By blocking the alpha-1 receptors in the smooth muscles of the prostate and bladder neck, Alfuzosin reduces the constriction of these muscles, allowing urine to flow more freely and relieving the pressure on the urethra. This results in improved urinary symptoms and increased urine flow.
