Anastrozole is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called aromatase inhibitors. It is primarily used in the treatment of breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
Anastrozole works by inhibiting the enzyme aromatase, which is responsible for the conversion of androgens (male hormones) into estrogens (female hormones). By blocking this enzyme, the production of estrogen is reduced, which is beneficial in the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.
Breast cancer cells often rely on estrogen to grow and divide. By reducing estrogen levels, anastrozole helps to slow down or stop the growth of these cancer cells. It is commonly prescribed as an adjuvant therapy (after surgery or radiation) or as a first-line treatment for advanced or metastatic breast cancer.
