Desloratadine is an antihistamine medication used to relieve allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat. It is commonly used to treat hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and hives (urticaria).
Desloratadine works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance produced by the body during an allergic reaction. Histamine is responsible for causing the symptoms associated with allergies. By blocking histamine receptors, Desloratadine helps to reduce or prevent these symptoms.
Unlike older antihistamines, Desloratadine is considered a second-generation antihistamine. It is less likely to cause drowsiness and has a longer duration of action, typically providing relief for up to 24 hours with a single dose.
