Drospirenone is a synthetic progestin, which is a type of hormone used in combination with estrogen in hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills. It is also used in the treatment of various conditions related to hormonal imbalances, such as acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Drospirenone works by mimicking the effects of progesterone, a natural hormone produced by the ovaries. It binds to progesterone receptors in the body and exerts its effects, including the suppression of ovulation (release of an egg from the ovary), thickening of cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching the egg, and thinning of the uterine lining to make it less receptive to implantation of a fertilized egg.

Additionally, drospirenone has anti-androgenic properties, meaning it can counteract the effects of androgens (male hormones) in the body. This can be beneficial in conditions like acne, as it helps reduce the production of sebum (oil) in the skin and prevents the formation of acne lesions.
