Orlistat is a medication used for weight management and the treatment of obesity. It is sold under the brand name Xenical or Alli. Orlistat works by inhibiting the action of an enzyme called lipase, which is responsible for breaking down dietary fats in the intestines. By blocking the activity of lipase, Orlistat prevents the absorption of about one-third of the fat consumed in the diet. This undigested fat is then excreted from the body through bowel movements. As a result, Orlistat helps to reduce calorie intake and promote weight loss. It is typically used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise program.
