Raloxifene is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). It is primarily used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Raloxifene works by selectively binding to estrogen receptors in various tissues throughout the body. It acts as an estrogen agonist in some tissues, meaning it mimics the effects of estrogen, while acting as an estrogen antagonist in other tissues, blocking the effects of estrogen.

In the bones, raloxifene stimulates the activity of osteoblasts (cells responsible for bone formation) and inhibits the activity of osteoclasts (cells responsible for bone resorption). This helps to increase bone mineral density and reduce the risk of fractures.

Raloxifene also has estrogen-like effects on lipid metabolism, helping to lower LDL cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. However, it does not have the same stimulatory effects on the breast and uterus as estrogen, which makes it a safer alternative for women at risk of breast or uterine cancer.

It is important to note that raloxifene should not be used by premenopausal women, pregnant women, or women with a history of blood clots, as it may increase the risk of thromboembolic events.
